Trail Building / Maintenance

10/06/14: Are you ready for this? We had two boat loads of trail builders for a total of 16 workers who finished/groomed 593 yards of trail! No, we were not digging new trail because we are working on a segment that was contracted out last winter. That is still a great accomplishment - more than a quarter mile of finished trail in one morning! Two groups were deployed working in opposite directions to meet in the middle.

Weather was coming in, so we even quit a little early. Larry S. and I sped through small whitecaps as we made our way back to the Tellico Yacht Club from the Tellico Canal Boat Ramp. Thunder, lightning and drenching rain hit just after we pulled into the boat slip.

Those participating in this significant event today were: Mel Fisher, Ben D'Ooge, Gene Brownell, Jake Thornton, Larry Benson, Ernie Johnson, Tom Schemberger, Rob Hambrecht, Joe Kushmaul, George Zola, Garry Lucas, Tom and Nadine Wittkopp, Darrell Cuthbertson (TVA), Bob Martin, and Larry Smartt.

One more boat ride and then I believe we will be accessing the trail from roadway with some required hiking with tools. The plan at this time for next week, Tuesday, October 14th, is to boat over from Poplar Springs boat ramp. The Tellico Canal Ramp is scheduled to be closed on the 12th. East side folks, we can pick you up at Antioch Church Rd. if you prefer.

Trail builders, you are an awesome group! It looks like we are on track to complete the trail sooner than thought. But that does not mean we are done working on the trail. Remember, trail maintenance and making improvements is a never-ending job.

06/30/14: Larry Smartt, Mel Fisher, Dave Noble, Ben D'Ooge, Gene Brownell, Jake Thornton, Ernie Johnson, George Southworth, Rob Hambrecht, Steve West, Jim Blaker, Joe Kushmaul, Barry Brandt, Oscar Lidstrom, Garry Lucas, Bob Filip, Darrell Cuthbertson (TVA), Bob Martin and two newcomers Don Lucas and Jerry Willis.

The above twenty (20) men showed up this morning to help transport and build a 20-foot bridge at the end of Mizell Cove on the Baker Hollow Branch. Today was an extra trail building day and it proved to be very productive. It took a bunch of guys to lift the partially built bridge and load it onto a 20-foot TVA john-boat. All the rest of the pre-fabricated building material was loading in the boat and then launched at the 321 boat ramp.

Darrell took it across the lake and we off-loaded close to the bridge site. With many hands the bridge carcass was lifted and placed on the bridge headers installed last week by Mel Fisher, Larry Smartt and Bob M.

Gene Brownell, Steve West, Oscar Lidstrom and Bob Martin put the bridge together while the rest of the crew worked on building trail approaches at both ends of the bridge and a rock wall to protect the north abutment under the bridge, and improving the channel-way under and around the bridge by moving boulders and huge chunks of broken concrete containing twisted pieces of reinforcement steel that was dumped there in times past. Including the length of the bridge, 250 yards of trail was completed!
